Debate ‘08– presidential debate #1

 (this is just me freestyle taking notes on the debate)

Obama

• 95% of working families will get tax cuts
• Energy independence
• Invest in renewable energy (10 year plan to wean us off ….)
• Competing in education-we MUST keep up
• Affordable college
• Eliminate programs that don’t work
• 15 billion dollars to private insurers- and it was a waste
• Lobbyists shape how medicare works
• Track every tax payers dollar to see where it’s going and who delegated it to go there
• Early child hood education- needs to fund more
• 79 billion dollar surplus in Iraq but we are still sending money
• Leaving out health care for people who need it, but cutting taxes for
• Smooth talker
• Need more troops and resources in Afghanistan
• Wants to capture and kill Bin Laden and shut down the Al Quieda
• Our foreign policy is not working
• Obama is really about his views; he doesn’t disagree for the sake of disagreeing; on some issues he takes the same stand as McCain but then he elaborates on why and gives examples of what’s working and what’s not working and what he plans to do to strengthen or eradicate it
• No preconditions
• “If we can’t meet with our friends, who CAN we meet with?”
• Nuclear proliferation- 15,000 and able to make 40,000 more WMDs
• Russians invaded Georgia (a country nearby Russia)
• Not enough in transit and courts
• Nuclear proliferation is the biggest threat in USA
• The way we are perceived in the world will determine whether we get allinaces; he plans to restore our reputation as a country
• Believes in missile defense
• China has been making a come-up because we have been absent as a superpower on the international scene

McCain

• 35% business taxes-highest business taxes in the world
• $5,000 tax cut for EVERY family
• $300 million tax cut for wealthy people and corporations
• “cut spending no matter what”
• Defense spending (?)
• Saved tax payers 6.8 million dollars
• Sending money to countries that “don’t like us very much”
• Slick, scary smile
• Rambles on and never answers the question
• Doesn’t address Obama
• It’s always the ignorant white people-like George Bush, hopefully McCain will prove to be enough like Georgy to disgust the American people
• Pathos approach with no evidence or logical reason whatsoever
• He bullshits and uses his own opinion on things instead of the opinion of the majority of the country- but then again that might just be the Republican way
• Ambiguous and relates everything back to his military experience
• Contradicts his own advisors
• Wasn’t sure who America’s alliances were!!
• Using personal relationship history instead of political stances when it comes to politicians he knows
• The relationship with Russia had to do with energy
• We should bolster our alliances
• Nuclear fuel and nuclear waste must be removed
• Cooperation between parties in helping out with 9/11
• No more torturing POWs anymore
• Do a better job with borders (terrorism)
• If we fail in Iraq  Al Quieda will then use Iraq as a base and continue to attack us
• Has been a POW
